Our answers to your questions

What is sustainable aviation fuel?

SAF is a substitute for kerosene. They emit the same amount of CO2 during a flight as kerosene. SAF has lower emissions due to its manufacturing process.

The SAF that Air France selects:

  • is made from non-fossil resources such as used oils.
  • reduces CO₂ emissions by at least 65% over the entire life cycle (from manufacture to combustion), compared with kerosene.
  • meets European Union criteria (no competition with food chains, no production from palm oil).

Air France goes one step further by applying these sustainability criteria to all selected SAF, including those purchased outside of Europe.

How are your options used?

As the cost of SAF is significantly higher than that of fossil kerosene, your contributions help us to invest even more in these fuels and accelerate their development.

European regulations require aviation fuel suppliers to include a minimum 2% SAF in their deliveries to European airports.

A SAF contribution is already inclued in the price of all our flights. Its amount is listed in your ticket price breakdown on the line: “Contribution to Sustainable aviation fuel”

With your help, via the Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) option, we can increase the volume of SAF purchased and used. Every euro paid in is fully invested in the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel. Your contribution is allocated to the purchase of SAF no later than twelve months after the date of your transport.
